德语有26＋4（ ä ,ö ,ü ,ß  ）个字母，42个音素。元音音素和辅音音素。

德语的音节由一个元音或一个元音加上几个辅音构成。一个词中由几个元音就有几个音节。以元音结尾的音节叫开音节，以辅音结尾的为闭音节。

德语是拼音文字，根据发音规则，大部分单词都可以拼读出来，但德语中也有一些词发音不规则，特别是某些外来语，需要借助音标拼读（这些词或不规则发音的词在字典中一般都有注明）

德语单词的音标中只有8个符号与德语字母不同。
